Ranking on Google’s first page is difficult. Everyone wants to get there. It’s not only time-consuming but needs efforts in the right direction. There are many people who got the same problem. Many people have a different way of doing SEO. In this blog, I am going to share my SEO best practices 2016 checklist. This will get you a higher ranking on Google.
People invest ample of time on SEO. Still, they don’t get results. They are nowhere on the first page too. Do you know why? Are they doing it wrong? If yes, then what is the right way? Did you ever use a checklist to keep a track of your SEO practices? This is where people go wrong. They know the basics but fail to apply them. There are more that 250 factors to rank on Google. I will discuss only top most on-page & off-page ranking factors.
SEO best practices 2016 checklist importance?
This checklist includes steps you need to follow for your SEO process. It outlines the basic & advanced steps to follow while your SEO audits. For best SEO practices, the checklist is divided into 2 sections.
On Page SEO checklist
Off page SEO checklist
On Page, SEO is an important ranking factor. There are many factors that come under on-page SEO. Here are all the important on-page factors to consider.
The Post Title – It’s the identity of your content. Also known as H1 tag. You often heard the quote “Content is the King”. Every king has his identity so as your content. According to a survey, it was claimed, your title tag plays an important role to attract more clicks on your website. It decides how your post is performing on the search engines.
The maximum character limit for post title should not extend more than 65 characters.
Always use your focused keyword, phrase in the beginning of your title tag.
Don’t try keyword stuffing, try to use it wisely for better ranking on the search engines.
Write titles that attract people to click & read your post.
Mention 1 or 2 benefits in your title tag.
The Permalink structure – Permalinks are info displayed in your URL’s tab. It is important to have an SEO friendly Url structure. It’s better to use your title tag in the Url. Ways to optimize your URL structure.
Use title or keyword in your URL.
Always use different URLs for every post.
Never use signs & symbols in your URL.
You can use alphabets, numbers or dashes to differentiate your URL’s
The best practice is to have the category/subcategory and then the post name.
Heading Tags (H2-H6) – There is no H1 tag in the body. The H1 tag is the identity of your post. Tags such as H2, H3, H4, H5 & H6 are included in the body. These tags are sub-headings. There could be multiple H2 – H6 heading tags in your post. Best practices are to use them only once.
Using your keywords in H2 & H3 is a good idea. Don’t stuff the keywords. Use them wisely.
Use H2-H3 tags only once, although, there are no specific rules.
Keyword Density – The biggest question asked my many people. How should I use my keywords? What should be the keyword density? The best practices to use keyword is,
Always use your main keyword in the first paragraph and within 100 words of your content.
You can use them in the H2 & H3 tag, if you’re are smart enough to do so.
Use of your main keyword along with the LSI keywords is always a great idea.
Using your keyword in the last paragraph is considered as a good practice.
Bold your important keyword.
Always keep your keyword density between 1%-1.5%.
Meta Description – They are the describing links that appear below the search engine results. You can also call them as traffic driving factors. Always write an appealing and descriptive summary in order to increase your CTR. Mention benefits in your meta description.
The max limit for your meta description is 160 characters.
Use unique descriptions for different posts.
Image Optimization – Images play an important role. Studies show that images in your contact make it more attractive, clean and self-explanatory. Optimizing your image is also one of the on-page ranking factors.
Adding an alt text to your image helps the search engines to identify them easily.
You can add your main keyword as an alt text in the image section. Making it more relevant for your content.
Word Count per page – Before writing your content always research. Researching helps you to write informative & unique content. According to a research, your content should always be more that 600 words in order to rank on search engines. If you have done a good research, you will always be loaded with words.
Try to cover a majority of sub-topics.
Load your readers with all the information they need to know about.
Always write naturally, write for the readers first and then for the search engines.
Internal & External Linking – Inbound & Outbound links play an important role. The search engines know about how trustworthy your site is with these links. Internal linking is linking your content within your own website. External links are they links that go outside your website content. An anchor tag does it all.
Internal Links are within your own website or other blogs that link to your content.
You can use content within your own website, but it should be appropriate.
Do not over do it. If possible use a silo structure to link sections within your own website.

Copywriting Techniques – Copywriting is the most important part when it comes to On page SEO. Write content that is informative and allows the reader to perform some action at the end. Don’t just write the content, communicate with your readers. If you write engaging content it will help to lower your bounce rates and rank better on the search engines.

Write content more that 600 words.
Don’t write title’s more than 65 characters.
Write Meta description within 160 characters.
Use social sharing buttons.
Always have a call to action message at the end.
